The grasslands of Dinokeng support an abundance of indigenous wildlife - including zebra, hyena, giraffe, buffalo and eland - which can be seen in the five provincial nature reserves of Rust de Winter, Mdlala, Mkhombo, Leeuwfontein and Roodeplaat, as well as in a number of smaller private conservancies. The 12 500 ha Dinokeng Game Reserve will be home to Africa’s famous ‘Big Five’ - lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros.
The close proximity of water, grassland and bushveld attract a wide variety of birds to a relatively small area, making Dinokeng a birdwatcher’s paradise with the highest species diversity in the country besides northern KwaZulu Natal.
You can experience Dinokeng’s natural diversity ini a variety of ways - you can take a game drive or choose a ‘hands on’ interpretive experience such as geological, ecological or archaeological trails. There are walking and photographic safaris, game viewing by horseback and if you are patient you might prefer to spend your time spotting in a bird hide.
